Annular Tears
Consider the outer portion of your disc as the fibers of a car’s radial tire. The natural aging process, wear and tear, or trauma causes annular tears. Almost everyone develops annular tears before the age of 20. Sometimes these tears cause symptoms and sometimes they don’t.

Herniated Disc
A herniated disc is the result of tears of the disc’s annulus fibrosus (outer section) allowing the nucleus pulposus (inner jelly section) to leak through the disc.
Most herniated discs are found in the lower back (the lumber section).

Leaky Disc Syndrome
Leaky Disc Syndrome is a term coined by Dr. Pauza because he found himself continuously explaining to patients how their pain or symptoms were likely caused by inner portion of the disc to leak onto the spinal nerves, causing inflammation and pain.

Chronic Low Back Pain
Any pain lasting longer than six months is considered chronic pain. The most common cause is a torn disc or discs. Facet joint arthritis is a less common cause of chronic low back pain. Treatment should only be considered if it interferes with everyday life.

Sciatica
Sciatica refers to pain radiating down the leg along the path of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is not caused by a pinched nerve, but in reality is caused by a torn disc which leaks onto a nerve, thus causing inflammation and pain.

Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) isn’t actually a disease. Most discs become degenerated from normal wear and tear that have torn the discs, causing them to leak over time, becoming dark and flat.
